    Microsoft Launches its Own Tablet: The Surface

    We knew already that Microsoft mysterious event today would have something to do with a tablet, we were right as Microsoft has unveiled its Surface Tablet called the Microsoft Surface.

    Described as a “tablet that’s a great PC, and a PC that’s a great tablet,” the Surface has a 10.6-inch display, 9.3mm thickness, magnesium casing, a kickstand and a multitouch keyboard with a built-in trackpad and weighs in at just 1.5 pounds.

    The Surface will be available in two varieties: one, built on ARM architecture, running Windows RT, available in 32GB and 64GB and a Pro version, which uses Intel CPUs, and runs a full version of Windows 8 with higher capacities

    Microsoft to Launch its Own iPad-killer Tablet

    Microsoft sent out invitations for a major announcement in Los Angeles next Monday, rumors about just what the company will be announcing are starting to fly, beginning with TheWrap reporting that the company would be announcing a Microsoft-manufactured tablet, AllThingsD followed claiming that Microsoft wanted to take on the iPad directly.

    Sources say that Microsoft concluded that it needs its own tablet, with the company designing both the hardware and software in an effort to better compete against Apple’s strengths. Microsoft’s tablets may include machines running ARM-based processors as well as models running on traditional PC processors, sources said.

    Following the success of own device Xbox, Microsoft could be actually working on manufactured by Microsoft itself, running on Windows RT (a version of Windows 8) tablet intended to rival Apple’s iPad.

    Other sources claim that Microsoft is actually aiming at Amazon not Apple, by bringing a 7-inch tablet and not to mention that Microsoft had signed a deal with Barnes & Noble to invest in nook business. A Nokia-made, Microsoft-branded 7-inch tablet is also a possibility

    The timing is interesting, as it comes just before Google I/O, where Google is expected to announce a new 7-inch tablet running Android.

    Microsoft revealed its full suite of editions that will be available for “Windows 8” when it is released to market, that includes Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro, and Windows 8 Enterprise. and Windows RT that will run on ARM-based machines, primarily aimed at tablets. According to the verge:

    Windows RT will not be sold separately, but only available pre-installed on new machines with ARM processors. That’s a major change in the way Microsoft has traditionally sold Windows, and it underscores a more integrated approach to ARM-powered devices like tablets. Windows RT will also include the Office suite, but no other desktop apps can be installed on ARM machines. Windows RT will also lack the traditional Windows Media Player and most of the enterprise features found in Windows 8 Pro and Enterprise.

    Yet to see if Microsoft’s plan is to build Windows RT into something that’s more closely like Windows 8 or something else entirely.
