• Gran Turismo 5 Hacking Begins via PS3 Exploit

As you’ve probably heard by now, the PlayStation 3’s security has been completely cracked, allowing unfettered access to the console’s software, files, and games. Unsurprisingly, GT5 has been an active target for hackers taking advantage of the compromised system. Their first major accomplishment involves a way to easily duplicate game-saves between different PSN accounts (sorry, I won’t be providing any source links for information on how to do this).

That’s interesting, but the next step — manipulating the game data itself — could have far greater implications . Imagine, for example, the ability to manually set any attribute of any car in your garage (power, weight, etc.) to any value, or swap out engines, transmissions, and other parts. This actually isn’t a new concept to GT — it’s called “hybriding”, and it’s been going on since the dawn of the series.

In the past, however, hybriding was a mostly a solitary activity — nobody cared if you had a Daihatsu Midget II with 1500 horsepower. With the advent of online racing in GT5, however, this could enable dishonest players to compete with others using an unfair and hidden advantage.

Once again, hybriding in GT5 has not yet been accomplished, and may not even be possible. However, people are out there trying to do it and may be successful. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds and what, if anything, Sony will be able to do about it.

  • Sony Takes Geohot to Court Over PS3 Jailbreak

    George Hotz

Sony has just filed a restraining order against Geohot and members of team fail0verflow for jailbreaking the Sony Playstation 3.

Defendants George Hotz, “Bushing,” Hector Cantero, Sven Peter and “Segher” (collectively, “Defendants”) are computer hackers. Working individually and in concert with one another, Defendants recently bypassed effective technological protection measures (“TPMs”) employed by plaintiff Sony Computer Entertainment America LLP (“SCEA”) in its proprietary PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system (“PS3 System”). Through the Internet, Defendants are distributing software, tools and instructions (collectively, “Circumvention Devices”) that circumvent the TPMs in the PS3 System and facilitate the counterfeiting of video games. Already, pirated video games are being packaged and distributed with these circumvention devices. Declaration of Ryan T. Bricker In Support of Ex Parte Motion for Temporary Restraining Order And Order To Show Cause Re Preliminary Injunction; Order for Impoundment (“Bricker Decl.”) ¶2, Exh. A. Pursuant to Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 65 and Local Rules 65-1 and 7-10, SCEA moves ex parte to put an immediate halt to the ongoing distribution of these illegal Circumvention Devices and avoid irreparable harm to SCEA and to other video game software developers stemming from video game piracy.

Hopefully the courts will use the same logic that Library of Congress Copyright Office used when ruling that iPhone jailbreaking was legal. “When one jailbreaks a smartphone in order to make the operating system on that phone interoperable with an independently created application that has not been approved by the maker of the smartphone or the maker of its operating system, the modifications that are made purely for the purpose of such interoperability are fair uses.

Geohot has been instrumental in the iPhone jailbreak scene. If anyone would like to offer him assistance you can find the Motion For TRO and Proposed Order as well as his contact details at the link below…

    Update:
Sony’s filings are for a temporary restraining order that demand all information about the jailbreak be removed from the web. A full lawsuit is expected in a few days time.

  • How to take Stunning Interior & Engine Shots in Gran Turismo 5

    Gran Turismo 5

    – This ONLY works in PHOTO TRAVEL w/ a Premium Car.

    – Specifically in only two locations:

    1. Step#1 – In Luzern Chapel Bridge you MUST place your car in location # 2 & #4, #2 is adjacent to the Chapel by the water.
    2. Step#2 – Position your car with the desired interior side you wish to shoot from, keep in mind you do not have alot of free movement with the camera in this location.
    3. Step#3 – Walk as close to the car as you can, either if it’s the rear window, driver side window, passenger side window. etc.
    4. Step#4 – Set your F value all the way up so there is no blur effect
    5. Step#5 – Simply level your camera to the height of the window, and ZOOM IN.

That is all! I have yet to hear anyone do it, you simply glitch through the glass. And this only works in this location, alot of my weird angles are because you can glitch through the whole car itself. So a lot of times you get good angles.

  • Dan Brown writing the script for the upcoming THE LOST SYMBOL Movie

    The Lost Symbol

Mega-selling mystery author Dan Brown has taken over writing duties on the film adaptation of The Lost Symbol.

Columbia Pictures is developing the film version of Brown’s most recent novel, which was published in 2009 and sold more than a million copies in its first day on shelves. In it, Brown’s regular protagonist, Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon, gets mixed up with the Freemasons in Washington, D.C.

The 2006 adaptation of The Da Vinci Code and the 2009 version of Angels & Demons grossed $1.24 billion at the worldwide box office for Sony. But this is the first time Brown has taken on screenwriting duties. Akiva Goldsman penned Da Vinci and co-wrote Demons with David Koepp.

Oscar-nominated Eastern Promises scribe Steven Knight first took a run at the Symbol screenplay. Although Ron Howard and Brian Grazer’s Imagine Entertainment is once again producing, Howard, who directed the first two Brown adaptations, has not committed to directing Symbol. Nor has star Tom Hanks officially come on board to reprise Langdon.

Regardless, given the sure-thing built-in audience, Sony is sure to have Symbol in theaters sooner rather than later. With Men in Black III and the Spider-Man reboot already set for summer 2012, here’s betting that Brown’s latest is on screens the following summer.
