Microsoft Unveils a New Logo Since 1987

After 25 years, Microsoft has unveiled a new look and feel to its corporate logo. The new logo, which incorporates a multicolored Windows symbol in addition to the “Microsoft” name in straightforward, lighter type, is intended to “signal the heritage but also signal the future — a newness and freshness,” said Jeff Hansen, Microsoft’s general manager of brand strategy.

The new logo features the name “Microsoft” in the Segoe font — a font Microsoft owns and has used in its products and marketing for several years. The font also figures prominently in the new Windows 8 user interface.

Its not surprising that Microsoft got inspired by Apple in this time around, the new logo font Segoe is a clone of Apple’s Myriad Pro font which is used in Apple’s various products as the one typeface.

Interesting that what they ended up with reminds people of Google’s Chrome browser logo colors as well.

After Apple‘s OS X Mountain Lion announcement yesterday, Microsoft has unwrapped the new Windows 8 branding. Inspired by metro, the new logo is something Microsoft to brag about in the upcoming months.

The logo uses flat colors and clean lines and shapes to convey the message of Metro and will change color based on the core theme color used in Windows 8. “When you change your color, the logo changes to reflect you,” explained Moreau. Microsoft will use the logo in the new charms bar for Windows 8, adopting the chosen theme accent color. We are expecting to see the new logo in the Windows 8 Consumer Preview, due on February 29th.

Personally, this simple approach is one of many reasons let me unwillingly waiting for Windows 8. I just love glossy effects in Windows vista/7 but Windows 8 had to sacrifice that to, apparently, increase performance and in favor to the damned metro interface. Here is a look at various Windows Logos over years:

“We wanted the new logo to be both modern and classic,” said Microsoft’s Sam Moreau on the official Windows blog. The window is slanted somewhat, in keeping with the manner in which many of the Metro UI’s elements – such as live tiles – behave.

What a parody indeed, Digging inside the metadata for the original logo file showing its made on a Mac check it out here

Whats you opinions regarding the new logo? Is it simple, beautiful or underwhelming?
