celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Metal Gear series, game creator and designer Hideo Kojima attended PAX today to showed off 15 minutes of the first gameplay footage from his upcoming game. Though running on a PC, Kojima stated that the footage was comparable to what would be seen on the PS3 version of the game.

Kojima first talked about the engine that powers Ground Zeroes, the Fox Engine.

“There are a lot of amazing game engines out there — CryEngine, Unreal — but we wanted to get in there and tweak things ourselves,” Kojima said through a translator. Kojima Productions wanted to make their game development more efficient, he explained, in terms of creating a cross platform game engine that also supported cloud-based technology.

“You can use it to make an FPS, an adventure game like Uncharted, or something on rails,” Kojima said, including an open world game – which is the genre he’s making now.

The demo begins with an in-engine, real-time cinematic set in a rain-drenched prison camp, and ably shows off FOX Engine’s advanced shader, lighting, and particle effects.

“We’re not going to say that it’s Metal Gear Solid 5,” Kojima said after the demo, “but it is a prologue.” Kojima also confirmed that the demo was running on PC hardware that was similarly equipped to PS3, and that the final game should closely resemble the demo video.

Kojima also confirmed that he is personally creating Ground Zeroes.

“I want to make it clear that Snake is back, but I’m also back.”

Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes Announced, Running on Fox Engine

At the Metal Gear Solid 25th Anniversary event in Japan today, Konami and Kojima Productions offered the first glimpse of Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes the new entry of the popular franchise, unlike the previous installments, this game is said to be an open-world and features realtime cut-scenes and of course running on Kojima’s new Fox Engine.

No filming was allowed to show the 20 minute demo of Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, but according to GameSpot the gameplay demo took place in a remote, rainy military base.

“The demo gave out a sandbox open-world vibe; the military base itself felt expansive and huge, and Snake can summon a helicopter to bring him around as well as drive a jeep to go from point A to B. Kojima did state that he wishes to add a new spin to the stealth genre; even when you’re discovered, you can use all the means and tools to escape rather than see a “game over” screen. “

Given the Militaires Sans Frontières logo on Snake’s suit we assume this is Big Boss (Naked Snake) and this is another Shadow Moses entry.

  • E3 2011: Hideo Kojima Unveils FOX ENGINE

Metal Gear Maestro and game director Hideo Kojima unveiled new technology codenamed the “Fox Engine” at E3 Show today. As ign reports, this next-generation, multi-platform gaming engine will power a new project from Mr. Kojima, which is said to be something new from the designer after over a decade focused on directing Metal Gear Solid games.

Kojima still wants to keep the project under wraps. Instead, a technological showcase was presented showing the engine running in realtime featuring a young boy running through a jungle, there is a horse and a dog seen in the environment, both with realistic detailing rather than stylish interpretation.

The demonstration was run using an Xbox 360 dev kit, but the engine is built to run on PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and other advanced gaming platforms. Kojima himself is directing a game on the “Fox Engine” that is planned for release across multiple platforms. Work on this Kojima Productions original engine was begun shortly after the completion of MGS4, with further development informed by the development of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. The technology is, in part, made to provide a complete development suite for Konami developers, allowing for great-looking titles on reasonably shorter development schedules, according to Kojima.
