• THE LORD OF THE RINGS Extended Editions on Blu-Ray this year?

It looks like The Lord of the Rings Extended Editions will finally be released on Blu-ray this year! I have been waiting to see them in the super high quality 1080p, and I won’t have to switch over the disc in the middle of the film. The news comes from The Digital Bits, and here’s what they had to say,

Our sources are NOW telling us that WHV (and their now in-house New Line label) is ALSO planning to release Peter Jackson’s long-awaited The Lord of the Rings Trilogy: Extended Editions on Blu-ray sometime this year. No kidding. We suspect that, now that The Hobbit films are finally about to begin filming, the studio is eager to get more product on store shelves to keep the franchise fresh in the minds of fans. The Extended Rings films on BD are the obvious choice for this year. Farther down the line, of course, there will be the obvious Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D versions of The Hobbit films, and sooner or later an “ultimate” box set of all the films with all new extras custom created by Jackson. Anyway, our sources tell us to expect some kind of official news on all this (re: Rings: Extended and Kubrick) from the studio in the next several weeks.

  • Gran Turismo 5 Hacking Begins via PS3 Exploit

As you’ve probably heard by now, the PlayStation 3’s security has been completely cracked, allowing unfettered access to the console’s software, files, and games. Unsurprisingly, GT5 has been an active target for hackers taking advantage of the compromised system. Their first major accomplishment involves a way to easily duplicate game-saves between different PSN accounts (sorry, I won’t be providing any source links for information on how to do this).

That’s interesting, but the next step — manipulating the game data itself — could have far greater implications . Imagine, for example, the ability to manually set any attribute of any car in your garage (power, weight, etc.) to any value, or swap out engines, transmissions, and other parts. This actually isn’t a new concept to GT — it’s called “hybriding”, and it’s been going on since the dawn of the series.

In the past, however, hybriding was a mostly a solitary activity — nobody cared if you had a Daihatsu Midget II with 1500 horsepower. With the advent of online racing in GT5, however, this could enable dishonest players to compete with others using an unfair and hidden advantage.

Once again, hybriding in GT5 has not yet been accomplished, and may not even be possible. However, people are out there trying to do it and may be successful. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds and what, if anything, Sony will be able to do about it.

  • Apple to remove home button on next iPad and iPhone

We just got some pretty wild information from one of our Apple sources and while it’s hard to believe at first, it does make sense. We have exclusively been told that the reason Apple just added multitouch gestures for the iPad in the latest iOS 4.3 beta is because the iPad will be losing the home button. Yes, we are told that Apple, at some point in time, will remove the home button from the iPad’s design. Instead of button taps, you will use new multitouch gestures to navigate to the home screen and also to launch the app switcher.

That’s not all, however. In addition to the home button disappearing from the iPad, we’re told that this change will make its way over to the iPhone as well. Our source said Apple employees are already testing iPads and iPhones with no home buttons on the Apple campus, and it’s possible we will see this new change materialize with the next-generation iPad and iPhone devices set to launch this year.

Additionally, we’re told Apple’s popular photo-taking application, Photo Booth, will be appearing on the next iPad. It’s also very possible that we’ll see iLife apps for iOS unveiled around the iPad 2 release as well.

It has been said that Steve Jobs didn’t want any physical buttons on the original iPhone at first, and it looks like he may soon get his wish.
