The biggest Jordanian mansaf (traditional meal) is being prepared by a group of Jordanians to be included in the new edition of Guinness Book of World Records.
The mansaf is a Jordanian traditional meal usually served in large round plates at public occasions such as wedding parties, festivals and celebrities where a large number of people are invited to the meal. Its main components are rice, lean meat and jamid (dried yoghurt).
The giant manasf, the biggest ever, will be prepared in a very large plate of 30 meter diameter with a total cost of JD146,000 ( US$210,000), said Jordanian engineer Shaher Abdullah al-Basha, who initiated the idea.
About 20 thousand of Jordanian orphans and elderly people will be invited to the mansaf meal which will be held on March 19th in presence of representatives from Guinness Book organization, Basha said.
Preparations for the mansaf will take 9 hours of continuous work. The meal, sponsored by local companies, consists of 5000 kilos of meat, 2500 kilos of rice, 2500 kilos of yoghurt, 1000 kilos of jamid, 980 kilos of pine nuts, 1,750 kilos of dried almonds, 150 kilos of vegetable fat, 65 kilos of locally made animal fat (cooked and clarified butter), 35,000 pieces of shrak (largely flattened, very thin and circular pieces of bread) , and 275 kilos of spices made especially for mansaf, Basha told Petra.
The mansaf meal will be served in a very large plate made of galvanized and anti-corrosion stainless steal accredited by the Health Ministry. It is 490 sqm, 10 centimeters deep, one meter high above the ground with 600 meter long base of iron to carry it up and there are 400 cubic meters of thermal sand to preserve the food temperature at a certain degree, he said.
He added five teams will oversee the cooking; each team consists of one chef and 15 assistants. There will be 15 butchers to cut the meat into piece, each 250 grams. 90 large pots and 90 gas cylinders will be used for cooking and more than 150 volunteers will help in preparing the meal, which will be served by a host committee formed by one of Amman five stars hotels, said Basha.
He said he was attempting to register four breaking records for Jordan, the biggest mansaf, the biggest ad placard, the biggest candle and the biggest tent.
